A 2-minute lesson from the Massachusetts course. Read the rules and examples, follow the handbook page references, and check your understanding before you move on.
Regulatory signs tell you what the law requires or forbids. The permit exam asks you to identify them, so learn each symbol until you recognize it instantly.
Know the rule
Regulatory signs have a red or white background and inform drivers of traffic laws or regulations. Some use only words (SPEED LIMIT), some only images (NO U-TURN), and some both. A red circle with a diagonal slash means something is prohibited.
Do not enterNo left turnNo right turnNo U-turnNo trucksNo pedestriansNo bicyclesNo parking allowed between the posted hoursOne way: traffic moves only in the direction of the arrowDo not pass: you may not overtake another vehicleNo turn on red: you may not turn right after stopping at a red lightLeft turn only: all traffic must go leftKeep right of the upcoming median or lane divider
Put it into practice
You stop at a red light and want to turn right, but a NO TURN ON RED sign is posted. You must wait for the green light, even if no traffic is coming.
Check your understanding
