A 4-minute lesson from the Pennsylvania course. Read the rules and examples, follow the handbook page references, and check your understanding before you move on.
Guide signs tell you where you are and how to get where you're going: route numbers, exits, services and attractions. Learn the color code and the interstate numbering pattern and you can navigate without a map.
Know the rule
Guide signs are usually horizontal rectangles. They show intersecting roads, cities and towns, points of interest, hospitals, service stations, restaurants and motels.
Highway and expressway guide signs are green with white letters. Usually two advance signs come before a third sign posted at the exit itself, because speed and traffic make a single sign easy to miss.
Mile markers count miles from where a route enters the state. They start at zero in the west (east-west roads) and south (north-south roads) and increase as you go east or north. Entering PA from the west on I-80, markers begin at Mile 1.
Service signs are square or rectangular, blue with white letters or symbols, and show services at the next exit. Tourist-oriented directional signs are blue or brown with white lettering.
Approaching Exit 13, you see the small EXIT 13 tab on the left side of the green sign. Plan to exit from the left side of the highway, and move over in plenty of time.
