Many regulatory signs control which lane you use, when you may turn and which way traffic flows. Obeying them keeps you from turning into oncoming traffic or driving the wrong way on a ramp or one-way street.

Know the rule

Lane use control signs are black and white, often with arrows, and may be beside the road or hung over the lane. Arrows painted on the road may supplement them.

Handbook p. 40 ↗

Know the rule

Don't enter an intersection unless traffic lets you clear it completely, and don't block traffic entering from any other direction.

Know the rule

Never drive the wrong way on a one-way street, and never turn opposite the arrow.

Handbook p. 41 ↗

Know the rule

No-passing areas are based on how far you can see ahead, accounting for hills, curves, intersections, driveways and other places vehicles or pedestrians may enter.

Handbook p. 41 ↗

Know the rule

Do Not Enter signs are posted at openings you may not enter, such as exit ramps, crossovers on divided roads and one-way streets. Wrong Way signs are a short distance past them on expressway ramps.

Put it into practice

You turn onto what you think is an entrance ramp and pass a Do Not Enter sign, then a red Wrong Way sign. Together they mean you're on an exit ramp moving against traffic. Never continue the wrong way.

Check your understanding

Read the question, decide on an answer, then open it to check the explanation. These are Roadwise study questions based on the source handbook.

A 'No Turn on Red' sign means:
  1. You may turn only after a full stop
  2. You may turn left only, not right
  3. You may turn if no pedestrians are present nearby
  4. You may not turn at all during the red light

Answer: You may not turn at all during the red light

This sign prohibits any turn, right or left, on a red light; you must wait for a green signal.

Handbook p. 40 ↗
A 'Stop Here on Red' sign tells you:
  1. That the intersection has no traffic signal
  2. That pedestrians always have priority there
  3. Where to stop if the light is red
  4. That right turns on red are always illegal there

Answer: Where to stop if the light is red

This sign marks exactly where to stop for a red light; if there is no No Turn on Red sign, a right turn is still allowed after stopping.

Handbook p. 40 ↗
A 'Do Not Enter' sign is described as:
  1. A yellow diamond with an arrow
  2. A red octagon with white letters
  3. A white bar inside a red circle
  4. A blue rectangle with a white arrow

Answer: A white bar inside a red circle

This sign uses a white bar inside a red circle to indicate roadway openings you may not enter, such as one-way exit ramps.

Handbook p. 41 ↗
The 'Wrong Way' sign is typically seen:
  1. Only at four-way stop intersections in town
  2. Only at railroad crossings
  3. On guide signs pointing toward nearby cities
  4. Past a Do Not Enter sign on an expressway ramp

Answer: Past a Do Not Enter sign on an expressway ramp

The Wrong Way sign appears a short distance past a Do Not Enter sign, warning that you are moving in the wrong direction, such as on an exit ramp.
