A 3-minute lesson from the California course. Read the rules and examples, follow the handbook page references, and check your understanding before you move on.
Some road users simply can't keep up with traffic: farm and maintenance equipment, golf carts, neighborhood electric vehicles, and horses. Spot them early and adjust your speed.
Know the rule
Slow-moving vehicles take longer to get up to speed when entering traffic. Large trucks, bicycles, and some cars lose speed on long or steep hills.
Horse-drawn vehicles and people riding horses or other animals may share the road with motor vehicles. It is against the law to intentionally scare horses or livestock.
If you see a sign with a picture of an animal, watch for animals on or near the road. If animals or livestock are near the road, slow down or stop and proceed when safe.
A rancher is moving cattle across a rural road and waves you to stop. Stop and wait. Follow the person in charge of the animals, and don't honk or rev your engine to rush them.
Check your understanding
