A 4-minute lesson from the West Virginia course. Read the rules and examples, follow the handbook page references, and check your understanding before you move on.
Level 2 lets you drive alone during the day, with night and passenger limits while you gain experience. Keep a clean record for a year and you can move up to Level 3.
To get a Level 2 license you must:
Be at least 16
Have 180 consecutive conviction-free days on Level 1 right before you apply
Pass the road skills test (a maximum of three attempts)
Have 50 hours of certified driving (10 at night) or an approved driver's education course
Bring your identity and residency documents
Not use a wireless communication device while driving (9-1-1 calls excepted)
Each time you apply and test for Level 2, bring a certified birth certificate, your signed Social Security card, a valid School Driver Eligibility Certificate, and the 50-hour log.
First Level 2 conviction: you must enroll in a driver improvement program, or you stay at Level 2 until 18. Second moving-violation conviction: revoked until 18, then retest as a first-time applicant.
Level 3 requires age 17 and 12 months conviction-free on Level 2; you apply at a DMV Regional Office or Testing Center. It is optional: you may keep Level 2 and its limits until 18.
Under-18 transfers without a GDL equal to WV Level 2 must take the road skills and knowledge tests. A current driving record from the old state credits your time toward Level 1.
You're 16, three months into Level 2, and finish a shift at your job at 11:30 pm. You may drive home alone because lawful employment is an exception. You may not give a 17-year-old coworker a ride; no non-family passengers under 20 are allowed in the first six months.
