Restrictions, designations, fees and papers to carry
A 3-minute lesson from the West Virginia course. Read the rules and examples, follow the handbook page references, and check your understanding before you move on.
Your license can carry codes that limit how you drive, plus optional notes about your health, veteran status or organ donation. Knowing the fee chart and what papers to keep in the car rounds out licensing.
Know the rule
Restrictions appear as a number or letter code in the "restrictions" field on the front of the license; the explanation is printed on the back.
To be an organ donor, check the box on the application. You can join or leave the registry online anytime, but changing the designation printed on your card requires a new license and fees.
An honorably discharged veteran can add the veterans designation after the DMV verifies status, for example with a DD Form 214 or a military license plate registration.
Keep valid proof of WV liability insurance (certificate of insurance) and your current registration card in the vehicle. If stopped for a moving violation, you must show them with your license.
Your license shows restriction code 2 on the front. You must wear your glasses or contacts every time you drive; driving without them violates the restriction and can cost you your license.
