The knowledge test uses legal words with exact meanings. Learn these definitions from the handbook and many questions become easy, because the answer is often hidden in the definition itself.
Following distance
The space cushion between your vehicle and the vehicle directly ahead of you.
Handbook p. 9 ↗Blind spots
Areas on both sides of vehicles where you cannot see without turning your head.
Handbook p. 9 ↗Acceleration / deceleration lane
Extra lanes beside high-speed highways: one lets you pick up speed before merging; the other lets you slow down to exit without blocking through traffic.
Handbook p. 9 ↗Divided highway
A highway with separate roadways for opposite directions, split by an unpaved strip, a raised median, or another physical barrier.
Handbook p. 9 ↗Roadway
The part of the highway used for vehicle travel, not including the berm or shoulder.
Handbook p. 10 ↗Suspension vs. revocation
Suspension temporarily withdraws your license and driving privileges. Revocation terminates them and the license is not renewed, though you may later apply for a new one.
Handbook p. 10 ↗Low-speed vehicle
A four-wheeled vehicle made as one per its certificate of origin (not modified golf carts or ATVs). Allowed only on private roads and city streets posted 25 mph or less.
Handbook p. 10 ↗Moped
A 2- or 3-wheeled cycle with foot pedals and a motor of at most 2 horsepower and 50 cc, with a top speed of 30 mph.
Handbook p. 10 ↗Commercial motor vehicle
A vehicle rated 26,001 pounds or more, or built to carry 16 or more people including the driver, or carrying placarded hazardous materials.
Handbook p. 9 ↗Bus / school bus
A bus carries more than seven (7) passengers for pay. A school bus is public or private and carries children to or from school.
Handbook p. 9 ↗Antique vehicle
A vehicle over 25 years old kept as a collector's item for clubs, tours and parades, not for general transportation.
Handbook p. 9 ↗Driver / operator
Anyone who drives or is in actual physical control of a motor vehicle, including someone steering a vehicle that is being towed.
Handbook p. 10 ↗Put it into practice
Your friend offers you a modified golf cart to drive on a 35 mph town road. It isn't a low-speed vehicle under WV law, and even a real low-speed vehicle can't use a street posted over 25 mph.
