A 3-minute lesson from the Utah course. Read the rules and examples, follow the handbook page references, and check your understanding before you move on.
Utah offers an optional mobile driver license (mDL) that lives in an app on your phone. It is an official extension of your card, not a replacement. The handbook also lists recent laws that change how permits, motorcycles, and DUI cases are handled.
Know the rule
The mDL does not replace your physical license. Keep your physical credential on you whenever you drive.
An interdicted person must surrender their license or ID and get an interdicted card with a red 'NO ALCOHOL SALE' banner. Designation is required after an extreme DUI.
A clerk asks you to prove you're over 21. You open the mDL app, pick the age page, tap share, and let the clerk scan the QR code. You keep your phone in your hand the whole time.
Check your understanding
Read the question, decide on an answer, then open it to check the explanation. These are Roadwise study questions based on the source handbook.
What must you have before you can download Utah's mobile driver license (mDL) app?
A valid passport
A CDL only
Your physical driver license or ID card already issued
Nothing; you can enroll before applying
Answer: Your physical driver license or ID card already issued
To download the mDL app, you must first have been issued your physical driver license or identification card.
A store clerk asks to verify your age with your Utah mobile driver license (mDL). What should you do?
Hand the clerk your unlocked phone
Share a QR code from the app for their device to scan
Turn the screen so the clerk can read every field
Email a photo of your license to the store
Answer: Share a QR code from the app for their device to scan
Never hand over your device or show its data. You pick the data page, tap share, and the verifier's device scans the QR code to receive only what you approved.
