Know the rule

DPC applicants may use an ITIN issued by the IRS (or an IRS letter verifying it) instead of social security proof. A first-time DPC also needs a fingerprint card and photo in a sealed envelope (extra fee) from BCI, a participating police agency, or an approved vendor.

Handbook p. 26 ↗

Put it into practice

A 17-year-old U.S. citizen applying for a first license brings a passport, a signed social security card, a bank statement and a utility bill (both from the last 90 days), and a driver education certificate.

Check your understanding

Read the question, decide on an answer, then open it to check the explanation. These are Roadwise study questions based on the source handbook.

A first-time Utah license applicant must generally show, in addition to identity proof:
  1. Utah residency proof and a signed social security document
  2. Only a birth certificate
  3. Only a passport
  4. A notarized letter from an employer

Answer: Utah residency proof and a signed social security document

Applicants must show identity, social security verification, and two documents proving Utah residency.

  2. A 90-day learner permit log only
  3. Proof of 20 hours of practice driving
  4. Nothing beyond passing the written test

Handbook p. 24 ↗
How many Utah residency documents must you bring for a license, and how recent must they be?
  1. One, dated within 30 days

  2. A matricular consular card
  3. An ITIN issued by the IRS

Handbook p. 26 ↗
