Getting licensed goes fastest when you arrive with the right paperwork. The Driver License Division (DLD) runs on appointments, checks every document, and will send you home if anything is missing or not an original.

Before your visit:

  • Fill out the online application at dld.utah.gov; it prompts you to schedule an appointment
  • People with appointments are served before walk-in applicants
  • Double-check your documents and bring your appointment confirmation number
  • Arrive on time; a driving skills test may need a separate appointment
  • Book under the correct service, or the appointment may not be fulfilled
Handbook p. 21 ↗

Know the rule

All documents must be originals or copies certified by the issuing agency. Faxed or photocopied documents are NOT accepted.

Know the rule

Documents may need further review, and approval may not happen the same day. Every document is imaged, stored in a secure database, and immediately returned to you.

A name that differs from your identity document needs legal proof, such as:

  • State-certified marriage certificate or divorce decree
  • Updated passport or amended birth certificate
  • Adoption paperwork or a citizenship/naturalization certificate
  • Court documents showing the name change, sealed by the court
Handbook p. 21 ↗

Know the rule

Skills tests are not given in unsafe conditions: bad weather, or a vehicle that is unregistered or unsafe (for example, a broken windshield or no safety belts).

Know the rule

You may pay by check, credit card, or cash. Checks go to the Department of Public Safety for the exact amount; payroll and two-party checks are not accepted.

Getting a license certificate requires:

  • Driver education certificate, or a 'clear' license status from another state or country
  • Assumption of financial liability
  • Proof of identity and lawful presence
  • Two documents proving your Utah residence address
  • Proof of your full social security number (or of ineligibility for one)
  • Fees, a completed application, an eye exam, the written/driving tests, and a photo
Handbook p. 22 ↗

Know the rule

You must surrender your out-of-state license when you apply for a Utah license. First-time drivers, drivers never licensed in Utah, and drivers changing class are issued an original license.

Handbook p. 27 ↗

Put it into practice

You bring a photocopy of your birth certificate to your appointment. It will be refused. Bring the state-certified original (or a certified copy from the issuing agency), and it will be imaged and handed right back.
