A 3-minute lesson from the Utah course. Read the rules and examples, follow the handbook page references, and check your understanding before you move on.
Every Utah resident who drives a motor vehicle on the highways (any public roadway) must hold a valid Utah driver license, learner permit, or temporary driver license. So the first question is whether Utah law treats you as a resident, and whether anything bars you from being licensed.
You become a Utah resident if you:
Enter the state to make Utah your home
Stay in Utah six months or more during any calendar year
Get a driver license or register a motor vehicle in Utah
Get privileges not given to non-residents, such as school tuition
Are gainfully employed in Utah (not if you are here on a temporary assignment)
No license is needed to drive road rollers, road machinery, or farm tractors on Utah highways when they are used for a construction or agricultural activity.
You move from Nevada to take a permanent job in Ogden. Being gainfully employed in Utah makes you a resident, so you need a Utah license. If your company had only sent you here on a temporary assignment, your valid Nevada license would be enough.
