A 3-minute lesson from the Utah course. Read the rules and examples, follow the handbook page references, and check your understanding before you move on.
If you are under 19, Utah requires a full driver education course before your first license. The course has a classroom part, a behind-the-wheel part, and practice hours with a parent. Drivers 19 and older can choose a longer permit period instead.
Know the rule
The State Office of Education approves all Utah high school driver education courses. The Driver License Division approves all private and commercial courses.
Applicants 15–18 must finish an approved course before being licensed. School districts may allow the classroom part in public school, home study, or electronic high school, and the behind-the-wheel part with a private provider.
An out-of-state course certificate must meet Utah's required hours and needs a completed DLD200 form. Missing hours can be made up at an approved Utah driving school. Out-of-state online or home study certificates are NOT accepted.
Applicants 19 or older who were never licensed may skip driver education if they hold a learner permit 90 days and drive at least 40 hours (10 after sunset). Or they can finish an approved course and skip the 90-day wait.
To get an original Class D license while younger than 19, you must have completed approved driver education or show a license from another state or country.
A 16-year-old takes a Utah-approved online course (30 hours), completes 6 hours behind the wheel with an instructor, and logs 40 hours with a parent, 10 of them after sunset. Only then can she be licensed.
