Night driving is much more dangerous than driving by day because many people don't see as well in the dark. Drive trips in daylight when you can, never drive tired, and use your headlights exactly when the law requires.

Know the rule

Slow down at night and make sure you can stop within the distance lit by your headlights.

Handbook p. 53 ↗

Know the rule

Use headlights from 30 minutes after sunset until 30 minutes before sunrise, and any time people or vehicles can't be seen clearly for at least 1,000 feet.

Handbook p. 53 ↗
1,000 ft

Turn headlights on whenever you can't clearly see people or vehicles this far ahead

Handbook p. 53 ↗

Use low beams when:

  • Within 500 feet of an approaching vehicle
  • Following closely (within 300 feet) behind another vehicle
  • Driving on lighted roads
  • Driving in fog, heavy rain, sleet, snow, or dust
Handbook p. 53 ↗
500 ft

Handbook p. 53 ↗
300 ft

Use low beams when following another vehicle this closely

Handbook p. 53 ↗

Know the rule

Don't look directly into oncoming headlights; shift your eyes down to the lower right side of your lane.

Handbook p. 53 ↗

Know the rule

If you must park on an unlighted highway at night, leave your parking lights or low-beam headlights on.

Handbook p. 53 ↗

Know the rule

Never wear sunglasses at night.

Handbook p. 54 ↗

Overdriving headlights

Driving so fast your stopping distance is longer than the distance your headlights light. For stopping purposes, low beams are limited to 45 mph and high beams to 65 mph.

Handbook p. 80 ↗

Glare recovery time

The time your eyes need to regain clear vision after being affected by bright lights.

Handbook p. 78 ↗

Put it into practice

You're on a dark country road with high beams on when a pickup's headlights appear over a hill ahead. Switch to low beams once it's within 500 feet, and look toward the lower right edge of your lane until it passes.
