Reversible, reserved & shared center lanes
A 3-minute lesson from the New Mexico course. Read the rules and examples, follow the handbook page references, and check your understanding before you move on.
Some lanes change their rules by time of day or are set aside for certain vehicles. Look for overhead signals, signs and special markings before you drive in them.
Reversible lane
A lane that carries traffic one way at certain times and the opposite way at others, usually marked by double-dashed yellow lines.
Before driving in a reversible lane, check which lanes you may use at that time; signs may be beside the road or overhead, and special lights are often used.
A center lane for left turns (or U-turns where permitted) used by traffic from both directions; marked on each side by a solid yellow and a dashed yellow line.
Shared center lane with alternating left-turn arrows
Put it into practice
You're driving toward downtown and the lane you're in shows a steady yellow X overhead. Its use is about to change, so move out of that lane as soon as it is safe.
Check your understanding
Read the question, decide on an answer, then open it to check the explanation. These are Roadwise study questions based on the source handbook.
