Maine driving lesson · Right-of-Way, Signals, Signs and Markings
Traffic signals, arrows and lane-use lights
A 3-minute lesson from the Maine course. Read the rules and examples, follow the handbook page references, and check your understanding before you move on.
Traffic lights speak in colors and shapes. A solid light, a flashing light and an arrow of the same color each mean something slightly different, and the test checks that you know which is which.
Know the rule
Traffic lights are red, yellow and green from top to bottom. On horizontal lights, red is on the left, yellow in the middle and green on the right.
Lane use control lights: red X, yellow X, flashing yellow X, green arrow
Put it into practice
You're waiting at a red light to turn right and no sign prohibits it. Come to a full stop behind the line, let pedestrians and cross traffic go, then turn when it's clear.
Check your understanding
Read the question, decide on an answer, then open it to check the explanation. These are Roadwise study questions based on the source handbook.
