The road test: what the examiner scores
A 4-minute lesson from the West Virginia course. Read the rules and examples, follow the handbook page references, and check your understanding before you move on.
On the road test you drive a set route while the examiner scores specific maneuvers and your general driving. You won't be asked to do anything illegal or unsafe, and a mark on the sheet doesn't always mean an error.
Know the rule
The road test is given only after you pass all other parts of the exam, and you must arrive at the testing center lawfully.
The route may include a moderate grade, a right turn, a left turn, and a traffic light or stop sign. Use arm or light signals wherever the law requires.
At intersections, brake smoothly, stop behind signs, lines or sidewalks if needed, yield to anyone in the intersection, and never change lanes while going through.
At a red light you stop behind a pickup. You can see its rear tires on the pavement over your hood, so you've left a safe gap. When the light turns green you go straight through without changing lanes.
Check your understanding
Read the question, decide on an answer, then open it to check the explanation. These are Roadwise study questions based on the source handbook.
Which of these is an automatic failure on the road skills test?
Signaling slightly too early for a turn
Asking to adjust the seat before starting
Not wearing your safety belt
Braking a bit harder than necessary once
Answer: Not wearing your safety belt
Failing to wear your safety belt at any time during the test is an automatic failure.
