West Virginia driving lesson · Testing for Your License
Basic control skills test and scoring
A 3-minute lesson from the West Virginia course. Read the rules and examples, follow the handbook page references, and check your understanding before you move on.
Part of your driving test happens in a marked area: parking and turnabout exercises that show you can control the car at low speed. You may be tested on any subset of five exercises.
Practice these in a safe place, like a parking lot or residential area, with a properly licensed parent, guardian or friend over 21, in a variety of vehicles.
Use the correct turn signal when turning, backing, and entering or exiting an area. Every missed or wrong signal is an error; if it cancels on its own, turn it back on.
Right side parallel parking, steps 1–2Three-point turnabout, steps 1–4
Know the rule
In the three-point turnabout you drive forward to the right side of the area, stop, turn around in three moves, and drive forward into the roadway where you started.
On your parallel park you forget to signal before backing and your tire taps the curb once. Those are point errors, not automatic failures. Climbing the curb or knocking over a cone would end the test.
Check your understanding
Read the question, decide on an answer, then open it to check the explanation. These are Roadwise study questions based on the source handbook.
