West Virginia driving lesson · Testing for Your License
The knowledge exam and vision screening
A 3-minute lesson from the West Virginia course. Read the rules and examples, follow the handbook page references, and check your understanding before you move on.
Your license exam is a series of tests: vision, color recognition, traffic-law knowledge, road sign recognition, and your ability to drive safely in traffic. The written part and the eye test come first.
Know the rule
Everyone, new applicants and renewals alike, must pass the vision screening.
If you need glasses or contacts to reach 20/40, your license shows a "corrective lenses" restriction. With only one eye, you pass if that eye sees 20/40 or better.
Below 20/40 or with a serious visual defect, you fail and must see a vision specialist; if 20/40 can't be reached, the specialist completes form DLAB-2, which the Driver's License Advisory Board may review.
All first-time applicants must complete a short DUI awareness course after passing the road skills test. So must every out-of-state driver moving to WV, even if once licensed in WV.
You answer 18 questions correctly and run out of time on the rest. Unanswered questions count as wrong, so you fail with 18 of 25 (19 needed), and you must wait at least one week before trying again.
Check your understanding
Read the question, decide on an answer, then open it to check the explanation. These are Roadwise study questions based on the source handbook.
