West Virginia driving lesson · Testing for Your License
Your test vehicle and illegal equipment
A 3-minute lesson from the West Virginia course. Read the rules and examples, follow the handbook page references, and check your understanding before you move on.
Before the road test starts, the examiner inspects the car you brought. If it isn't legal and safe, there's no test. You also have to show you can find and use its safety equipment.
Know the rule
The test vehicle must comply with registration, inspection and equipment laws; a valid inspection sticker and proof of insurance are required.
Vehicle defects may mean failing the exam. The examiner may let you fix a minor defect and continue, but you can't switch to another vehicle on the same test date.
You must know the location and function of all safety equipment, including the parking/emergency brake. Failing to locate and demonstrate any of it is an automatic failure.
You arrive in your uncle's car, which has a cracked windshield and a driver's window that won't roll down. Both are problems: a cracked windshield is illegal equipment, and the driver's side window must be operational. Bring a different car on another day.
Check your understanding
Read the question, decide on an answer, then open it to check the explanation. These are Roadwise study questions based on the source handbook.
