A 2-minute lesson from the Virginia course. Read the rules and examples, follow the handbook page references, and check your understanding before you move on.
You share the road with mopeds, motorcycles, trucks, buses and RVs, and with vulnerable road users: pedestrians and people on bicycles, wheelchairs, skateboards, roller skates, scooters, and animals or animal-drawn vehicles. A walker hit by a car is especially likely to be seriously hurt.
Know the rule
It is illegal to drive distracted and carelessly around vulnerable road users. It's your responsibility to adjust your driving to avoid others' mistakes.
You must come to a full stop for a pedestrian using a cane or guide dog, which indicates blindness or vision impairment. Elderly people and people with disabilities may move slowly.
You're stopped at a crosswalk in the right lane while a pedestrian crosses in front of you. You must stay stopped until they've passed your lane. The car in the lane beside you mustn't pass you at the crosswalk either.
Check your understanding
Read the question, decide on an answer, then open it to check the explanation. These are Roadwise study questions based on the source handbook.
When making a right or left turn, who has the right-of-way over the turning driver?
Only oncoming vehicles
Only cyclists in a bike lane
Pedestrians crossing the street
No one; the turning driver always has priority
Answer: Pedestrians crossing the street
Be especially aware of pedestrians when turning; they have the right-of-way, so let them completely cross first.
