If another driver hits you and flees, report it: that report is what lets your own insurance pay. If someone is hurt, a few careful steps help while skilled help is on the way, and a few wrong ones can make injuries worse.

Know the rule

Report any hit-and-run crash to law enforcement for investigation. Uninsured motorist coverage will pay for damages in hit-and-run crashes reported to a law enforcement agency.

Handbook p. 66 ↗

Aiding the injured

  • When calling a doctor or ambulance, state the crash location clearly and correctly
  • Don't assume people aren't hurt because they say so; send for skilled help quickly
  • Don't move or lift victims unless absolutely necessary; if you must, get help and keep their position
  • Stop serious bleeding with thick, clean cloth pads, pressed by hand or bandaged
  • Keep victims comfortable: shade and cool them if hot, cover them if cool
Handbook p. 66 ↗

Know the rule

Unskilled handling of an injured person can do more harm than good.

Handbook p. 66 ↗

Liability insurance

Pays damages the insured is legally obligated to pay; covers others when you are at fault.

Handbook p. 79 ↗

Uninsured motorist insurance

Covers your costs up to a certain amount if you are struck by a driver who has no insurance.

Handbook p. 81 ↗

Under-insured motorist insurance

Covers costs above what the at-fault driver's insurance will pay after a collision caused by that driver.

Handbook p. 81 ↗

Collision insurance

Pays to repair or replace your vehicle after a collision.

Handbook p. 77 ↗

Comprehensive insurance

Covers repair or replacement of your vehicle for damage other than from a collision.

Handbook p. 77 ↗

Property-damage insurance

Protects an at-fault driver against claims for damage to another person's property, up to set limits.

Handbook p. 80 ↗

Put it into practice

A car sideswipes you and speeds off. Get to safety, note what you can about the vehicle, and report it to police. Without that report, your uninsured motorist coverage may not pay for the damage.
