Regulatory signs, usually white rectangles, tell you the law: speed limits, turns you can't make, lanes you must use. Warning signs, usually yellow diamonds, alert you to a condition ahead that may call for slowing down.

Know the rule

A white sign with a red circle and diagonal slash means NO — whatever is shown under the slash is forbidden (no trucks, no bicycles, no left turn, no U-turn, no parking).

Handbook p. 51 ↗

No trucks and no left turn signs

Other regulatory signs

  • Lane control signs: some lanes for trucks, some must go straight or turn
  • HOV signs: lanes for buses and vehicles with the minimum occupants shown
  • Speed signs: maximum, minimum, or a change in the limit
  • DO NOT ENTER: a one-way street you may not enter from your direction
Handbook p. 51 ↗

Know the rule

The school speed sign is used when children are within walking distance of a school. It runs on a time clock and flashes yellow lights while showing the school speed limit.

Handbook p. 51 ↗

Know the rule

SLOWER TRAFFIC KEEP RIGHT is used where there is more than one lane each way: stay in the far right lane unless passing or turning left, and never straddle lanes.

Know the rule

No-passing zones are based on how far ahead you can see. The yellow pennant-shaped NO PASSING ZONE sign is posted on the left side of the road.

Know the rule

It is illegal in Tennessee to stand in the roadway to hitchhike.

Common warning signs

Common warning signs
SignWhat it tells you
Turn sign (sharp arrow)Sharp turn; recommended speed 30 mph or less
Curve signCurve; recommended speed 30 to 55 mph
Reverse turnTwo opposite turns less than 600 feet apart
Advisory speed plateRecommended maximum safe speed
Fallen rockRocks may be in the road — watch the road
Stop ahead / signal aheadHidden stop sign or signal; start slowing
Narrow bridgePassing cars may need to slow
Merging trafficTraffic blends in; move over if you can
Handbook p. 52 ↗
Reverse turn

Know the rule

A lane-ends sign means your lane is ending: merge left and signal. A yield-ahead sign means a YIELD sign you can't see yet — start slowing.

Handbook p. 52 ↗

Know the rule

School signs near school grounds mean slow down and watch for children; the school bus stop ahead sign means buses load and unload there during the school season.

Put it into practice

A yellow diamond with a zigzag arrow and a '25 M.P.H.' plate below it appears. That's a reverse turn — two curves less than 600 feet apart — and 25 mph is the recommended safe speed. Slow down before the first bend.

Check your understanding

Read the question, decide on an answer, then open it to check the explanation. These are Roadwise study questions based on the source handbook.

The reverse turn warning sign marks two turns in opposite directions that are:
  1. More than 1 mile apart
  2. Less than 600 feet apart
  3. Exactly 1,000 feet apart
  4. Less than 100 feet apart

Answer: Less than 600 feet apart

The reverse turn sign marks two turns in opposite directions that are less than 600 feet apart.

Handbook p. 52 ↗
A small plate mounted below a curve warning sign that gives a recommended maximum safe speed is called the:
  1. Regulatory speed sign
  2. Object marker
  3. Advisory speed plate
  4. Lane control sign

Answer: Advisory speed plate

The advisory speed plate supplements a warning sign by giving the recommended maximum safe speed for that curve or hazard.

Handbook p. 52 ↗
A curve sign (as opposed to a sharper turn sign) is used to mark curves with a recommended speed in what range?
  1. Between 5 and 15 m.p.h.
  2. Between 55 and 70 m.p.h.
  3. Exactly 25 m.p.h.
  4. Between 30 and 55 m.p.h.

Answer: Between 30 and 55 m.p.h.

The curve sign marks curves with recommended speeds between 30 and 55 m.p.h.; the turn sign is used for sharper turns of 30 m.p.h. or less.

Handbook p. 52 ↗
A regulatory sign is generally rectangular in shape and tells drivers about laws or regulations, such as speed limits.
  1. True
  2. False

Answer: True

Regulatory signs are rectangular and inform drivers of laws and regulations like speed limits and lane uses.
