Being fit to drive starts before you turn the key. A quick routine (tires, fluids, seat, mirrors, belts, loose items) makes the car safer and gives you a clear view. Several of these steps are actually required by Pennsylvania law.

Know the rule

Check tire pressure against the recommended psi in the owner's manual or on the driver's side door jamb, using a tire pressure gauge. Check tires cold: before driving or at least three hours after. Let air out or add air until it matches.

Handbook p. 35 ↗
Once a month

Check your tires for wear and damage, and also before any long road trip

Handbook p. 35 ↗

The penny test for tread depth

  • Hold a penny by Lincoln's body between your thumb and forefinger
  • Put Lincoln's head into a groove where the tread looks lowest
  • If any part of Lincoln's head is covered by tread, you have a safe amount of tread
Handbook p. 35 ↗

Keep these tire tools in your vehicle at all times

  • Spare tire, lug wrench and jack
  • Flashlight, flares and reflective triangles
  • Wheel wedges, a flat tire repair kit and gloves
Handbook p. 35 ↗

Know the rule

Check fluid levels (engine oil, windshield washer, fuel). Adjust the seat so you can easily reach the pedals and controls and see clearly out the windshield, then set your mirrors.

Handbook p. 35 ↗

Know the rule

Set the rearview mirror to show traffic directly behind you. Set each side mirror so that when you lean left or right you can just barely see the side of your vehicle.

Handbook p. 35 ↗

Know the rule

It is illegal to hang anything from the rearview mirror while moving, or to place anything on the windshield that blocks your view. Tags, permits and placards may hang from the mirror only when parked.

Handbook p. 35 ↗

Know the rule

Secure loose items: in a crash they fly at the speed you were going. Put heavy objects in the trunk or buckle them in, and never store items on the rear window deck.

Handbook p. 35 ↗

Know the rule

Adjust your head restraint so its top is at least as high as the top of your ears.

Handbook p. 36 ↗

Know the rule

If you normally wear corrective lenses, always wear them to drive. Do not wear sunglasses or tinted contact lenses at night.

Handbook p. 36 ↗
75 percent

Being thrown from a vehicle increases your chance of death by this much; locked doors and a seat belt help keep you inside

Handbook p. 36 ↗

Know the rule

Fasten lap and shoulder belts on every trip, lock your doors (which also helps prevent carjacking), and keep fresh air flowing to stay alert and guard against carbon monoxide.

Handbook p. 36 ↗

Put it into practice

Your air freshener and parking permit hang from the rearview mirror. Before you pull out, take them down: nothing may hang from the mirror while the car is moving, and permits may hang there only when you're parked.

Check your understanding

Read the question, decide on an answer, then open it to check the explanation. These are Roadwise study questions based on the source handbook.

What is the 'penny test' used to check?
  1. Tire tread depth
  2. Brake pad thickness
  3. Windshield wiper wear
  4. Headlight alignment

Answer: Tire tread depth

The penny test, using Lincoln's head, checks whether tire tread depth is still adequate.

Handbook p. 35 ↗
When should you check your tire pressure to get an accurate 'cold' reading?
  1. Immediately after a long highway trip
  2. Before driving or 3+ hours after
  3. Only when the tire looks low
  4. Right after refueling

Answer: Before driving or 3+ hours after

Tires should be checked cold — before driving or at least three hours after.

Handbook p. 35 ↗
Where should you position your head restraint for proper crash protection?
  1. As low as possible for comfort
  2. It doesn't matter as long as it's attached
  3. So the top of the restraint is at least as high as the top of your ears
  4. Level with your shoulders

Answer: So the top of the restraint is at least as high as the top of your ears

A head restraint should be at least as high as the top of your ears to protect against neck injury.

Handbook p. 36 ↗
What does Pennsylvania law say about hanging objects from your rearview mirror while driving?
  1. It is legal only for air fresheners
  2. It is legal if the object is under 2 inches
  3. It is illegal while the vehicle is moving
  4. Permits and placards may hang there while driving

Answer: It is illegal while the vehicle is moving

It is against the law to have any object hanging from the rearview mirror while moving; tags, permits and placards may hang there only when the vehicle is parked.

Handbook p. 35 ↗
How much does being thrown from a vehicle in a crash increase your chances of death?
  1. About 75 percent
  2. About 10 percent
  3. About 25 percent
  4. About 50 percent

Answer: About 75 percent

Being thrown from a vehicle increases your chances of death by about 75 percent.

Handbook p. 36 ↗
It is legal to hang an object from your rearview mirror while driving as long as it is small.
  1. True
  2. False

Answer: False

It is against the law to have any object or material hanging from the rearview mirror while the vehicle is moving.
