Some licenses come with limits called restrictions; others add privileges called endorsements. Restrictions appear as letter codes on your license, and ignoring one is treated like driving without a license.

Know the rule

You may get a restricted license if you have limited driving experience or a medical condition that impairs safe driving. You may need a driving test to have a restriction removed.

Handbook p. 11 ↗

Know the rule

Disobey a restriction and you can be charged with driving without a license; a conviction puts points on your record.

Handbook p. 11 ↗

Common restriction codes

Common restriction codes
CodeMeaning
ACorrective lenses
BOutside rearview mirror
CDaylight driving only
DAuto transmission/power steering
FRestricted to 45 MPH
G25 mile radius
HSpecial hand devices
IIntermediate license
Handbook p. 11 ↗

Other codes include:

  • J: Electrical turn signals
  • R: Special seat cushion
  • T: Right outside mirror; Y: Left outside mirror
  • Q: More than five restrictions
  • U: Uncoded restriction (described on the back of the license, space permitting)
  • V: Medical variance; W: Farm waiver
Handbook p. 11 ↗

Know the rule

Any law enforcement officer, judge or physician can ask the Department to place restrictions on your license.

Handbook p. 11 ↗

You may have to submit a physician's statement if:

  • You've had epileptic seizures, convulsions or blackouts within six months before applying
  • An examiner, clerk, relative, officer, physician or similar person files a Driver Condition Report (Form 4319)
Handbook p. 11 ↗

Endorsement

The opposite of a restriction: it qualifies you to do something you couldn't do otherwise, such as drive a school bus or operate a motorcycle.

Handbook p. 11 ↗

Know the rule

A School Bus (S) endorsement is required to carry students between home and school, or to and from school events, in any vehicle designed for more than ten passengers.

Handbook p. 12 ↗

Know the rule

The S endorsement is issued only to drivers 21 or older who hold a Class E license or a CDL with a Passenger (P) endorsement. It can be suspended for one year for failing a required drug, alcohol or chemical test.

Handbook p. 12 ↗

Know the rule

Drivers 75 or older with a school bus endorsement must pass school bus skills testing every two years (biennially) to keep it.

Handbook p. 12 ↗

Know the rule

A Motorcycle (M) endorsement is required to operate a motorcycle or motortricycle on public roads. To add it, pass the motorcycle written, vision, road sign and skills tests.

Handbook p. 12 ↗

Put it into practice

Your license shows restriction code A. You must wear your glasses or contacts every time you drive. Driving without them can be charged as driving without a license, and a conviction adds points.
