The intermediate license (Class F) lets you drive without a supervisor, but with passenger and late-night limits. You're eligible from 16 until 18. It's supervised independence while you build experience.

To obtain an intermediate license:

  • Meet the Step One requirements, including holding the permit at least six months (182 days)
  • No alcohol-related convictions in the last 12 months
  • No traffic convictions in the last six months
  • A parent, grandparent, stepparent, guardian or certified trainer verifies your 40 hours at the office
  • Pass vision, road sign and written tests again if earlier results are more than one year old
  • Pass the driving test

Put it into practice

Six weeks after getting your intermediate license, you want to drive three 17-year-old friends to a game. Not allowed: in the first six months you may carry only one passenger under 19 who isn't immediate family. Your younger sister wouldn't count toward the limit.
