Some yellow warning signs tell you about intersections ahead. Regulatory signs state rules you must obey. A red circle with a red slash over a symbol always means you may not do what the symbol shows.

Know the rule

Many regulatory signs are square or rectangular, white with black or red letters or symbols. They cover traffic direction, lane use, turning, speed, parking and other special situations.

Handbook p. 50 ↗

Know the rule

A red circle with a red slash over a symbol means you can't do that action, such as no left turn or no U-turn.

Handbook p. 50 ↗
Prohibition signs (no left/right/U-turn, no trucks, no bicycles)
No Left Turn, No Right Turn, No U-Turn, No Trucks and No Bicycles

Know the rule

A stop sign is red with white letters and has eight sides. Come to a full stop and wait until crossing vehicles and pedestrians have cleared the intersection.

Handbook p. 51 ↗

Where to stop at a stop sign:

  • At the stop line, if there is one, even if it's past the sign
  • If there's no stop line, before the crosswalk
  • If there's neither, near the edge of the intersection; look both ways, then go when safe
Handbook p. 51 ↗

Know the rule

A yield sign is a red and white triangle with red letters. Slow down and yield to traffic in the intersection you're crossing or the road you're entering.

Handbook p. 51 ↗

Other regulatory signs

Other regulatory signs
SignMeaning
Wrong WayYou're facing oncoming traffic; pull off, turn around
Do Not EnterDo not enter this road
One WayTraffic may go in one direction only
Lane ControlArrows show which way each lane may go
Keep RightPass only to the right of a feature or obstruction
Handbook p. 51 ↗

Put it into practice

At a stop sign, the white stop line is painted a few feet beyond the sign. Stop at the line, not at the sign. With no line or crosswalk, you'd stop near the edge of the intersection.

Check your understanding

Read the question, decide on an answer, then open it to check the explanation. These are Roadwise study questions based on the source handbook.

What shape is a yield sign?
  1. Diamond
  2. Triangle
  3. Octagon
  4. Rectangle

Answer: Triangle

A triangle shape always means Yield.

Handbook p. 51 ↗
What does a red circle with a red slash over a symbol on a regulatory sign typically mean?
  1. A recommendation, not a requirement
  2. A warning of a hazard ahead
  3. You cannot do the action shown, like a U-turn
  4. A guide to nearby services

Regulatory signs with a red circle and slash indicate something you cannot do, such as no left turn or no U-turn.

Handbook p. 50 ↗
What does a 'Do Not Enter' sign mean at a roadway opening?
  1. You may enter but must yield first
  2. One-way traffic only, but entry is allowed

  4. Do not enter this road

Answer: Do not enter this road

When you see this sign at a roadway opening, you must not enter that road.

  1. True
  2. False

Answer: True

The Wrong Way sign warns you have entered oncoming traffic; pull off, turn around, and go back safely.
