Right-of-way laws decide who goes first when paths cross. They're based on courtesy and common sense, and ignoring them is a leading cause of crashes.

Know the rule

At an intersection without signs or signals, if you arrive at the same time as another driver, the driver on the left yields to the driver on the right.

Handbook p. 46 ↗

Know the rule

The same applies at all-way stops and flashing red lights: arriving together, the driver on the left yields to the driver on the right.

Handbook p. 46 ↗

Know the rule

Turning left, yield to oncoming vehicles that are in the intersection or close enough to be a crash risk.

Handbook p. 46 ↗

Know the rule

On a green left-turn arrow, yield to vehicles or pedestrians already in the intersection, then turn.

Handbook p. 46 ↗

Know the rule

At an uncontrolled T intersection, if you're the one turning, yield to all cross traffic.

Handbook p. 46 ↗

Know the rule

Entering a public road from a private road or driveway, stop and yield to pedestrians and traffic.

Handbook p. 46 ↗

Know the rule

In the right lane, yield to transit and metro mobility buses merging from a bus stop or shoulder, and to a school bus signaling left to re-enter the lane from a shoulder, right-turn lane or other stop.

Handbook p. 46 ↗

Know the rule

Yield to an entire funeral procession identified by headlights or hazard warning lights.

Handbook p. 46 ↗

Know the rule

Yield to pedestrians crossing at intersections and crosswalks, marked or unmarked.

Handbook p. 46 ↗

Put it into practice

You and another car reach an all-way stop at the same moment, and the other car is on your right. Let it go first.

Put it into practice

You're in the right lane when a city bus at a stop signals to pull out. Slow down and let it merge.

Check your understanding

Read the question, decide on an answer, then open it to check the explanation. These are Roadwise study questions based on the source handbook.

At an intersection without signals, when two drivers arrive at the same time, who must yield?
  1. The driver on the right yields to the driver on the left
  2. Whoever arrives second yields
  3. Neither yields; both proceed together
  4. The driver on the left yields to the driver on the right

Answer: The driver on the left yields to the driver on the right

At an uncontrolled intersection, the driver on the left must yield to the driver on the right.

Handbook p. 46 ↗
When making a left turn, whom must you yield to?
  1. Oncoming vehicles close enough to be a hazard
  2. No one, left-turning traffic always has the right-of-way
  3. Only pedestrians, not oncoming vehicles
  4. Only vehicles already in the intersection

Answer: Oncoming vehicles close enough to be a hazard

Left-turning drivers must yield to oncoming vehicles that are in or near the intersection.

Handbook p. 46 ↗
At an uncontrolled 'T' intersection, who must yield to cross traffic?
  1. The driver on the through road
  2. The driver on the ending road
  3. Whichever driver is turning right
  4. Neither driver needs to yield

Answer: The driver on the ending road

At an uncontrolled T-intersection, the driver on the ending road must yield to all cross traffic.

Handbook p. 46 ↗
When driving in the right lane, to whom must you yield if they are merging from a bus stop or shoulder?
  1. Delivery vans only
  2. Motorcycles only
  3. Any vehicle signaling left
  4. Transit and metro mobility buses

Answer: Transit and metro mobility buses

Drivers in the right lane must yield to transit and metro mobility buses merging from a stop or shoulder.

Handbook p. 46 ↗
How does a funeral procession typically identify itself so other drivers know to yield?
  1. Headlights or hazard lights on
  2. With a police escort only
  3. With a black flag on the lead vehicle
  4. With a flag on each vehicle

Answer: Headlights or hazard lights on

A funeral procession identifies itself using headlights or hazard lights, and other drivers must yield to the entire procession.

Handbook p. 46 ↗
When two vehicles reach an uncontrolled intersection at the same time, the driver on the right has the right-of-way.
  1. True
  2. False

Answer: True

The driver on the left must yield to the driver on the right at an uncontrolled intersection.
