Know the rule

A passenger vehicle's load may not extend beyond the line of the fenders on the left side, or more than six inches beyond the fenders on the right side.

Handbook p. 119 ↗

In an open vehicle such as a pick-up or convertible, a dog in the open area must be secured so it can't fall, jump or be thrown out.

Handbook p. 120 ↗

Exceptions to the dog rule:

Handbook p. 120 ↗

Put it into practice

You're driving three friends, 16 to 18 years old, to the beach in your pick-up, and one wants to ride in the bed. Not allowed: under 19, outside the cab, and not working, hunting or in a parade.
