A 3-minute lesson from the Louisiana course. Read the rules and examples, follow the handbook page references, and check your understanding before you move on.
Regulatory signs state the law: speed, lanes, turns and parking. They're square or rectangular and white with black, red or green letters, or they have a special shape. A red circle with a slash means the action shown is prohibited.

Know the rule
Speed limit signs (black and white) show the maximum legal speed, and on some high-speed roads the minimum speed you must go. Drive the maximum only in ideal conditions.
STOP sign: eight sides, red with white letters. Stop behind the stop line or crosswalk, yield to vehicles and pedestrians, then enter when safe. A 4-WAY, 3-WAY, 5-WAY or ALL-WAY plate means every approach stops.
Lane-use control signs (black and white, usually with arrows) show where you may go or turn; they may hang over the lane, and arrows may also be painted on the road.
DO NOT ENTER (white bar in a red circle): you may not enter. It's posted at wrong-way exit ramps, crossovers and one-way streets. A WRONG WAY sign a short distance past it means you're going the wrong direction.
You're stopped at a red light with a STOP HERE ON RED sign but no NO TURN ON RED sign. After stopping at the line and checking for traffic and pedestrians, you may turn right.
