Guide signs help you find your way: green or brown destination signs, blue service signs, and route markers whose shape shows the road type. Temporary fluorescent pink incident signs warn of closures and detours from unplanned events.

Know the rule

Guide signs are square or rectangular and green, brown or blue. They show intersecting roads, cities and towns, and points of interest.

Put it into practice

A green exit sign for your town has EXIT printed on its left side. Your ramp leaves from the left, so plan ahead to be in position on that side.

Check your understanding

Read the question, decide on an answer, then open it to check the explanation. These are Roadwise study questions based on the source handbook.

On a green exit sign, the word 'EXIT' appears on the left side. What does this tell you?
  1. The exit ramp is on the left
  2. The exit ramp is on the right
  3. The exit is closed ahead
  4. The exit is for trucks only

Answer: The exit ramp is on the left

If 'Exit' is written on the left side of the sign, the exit lane or ramp is to the left.

Handbook p. 34 ↗
A blue sign with a large white letter H means:
  1. A hotel is at this exit
  2. A historical area is ahead
  3. A hazardous materials route
  4. A hospital is nearby

Answer: A hospital is nearby

Blue service signs show services such as hospitals; the H symbol marks a hospital.

Handbook p. 35 ↗
The shape and color of route number signs show whether a road is an interstate, U.S., state, or local route.
  1. True
  2. False

Answer: True
