Work zones change the road without warning: lanes shift, close or narrow, and workers stand just feet from traffic. Orange devices guide you through, so read them early and follow them exactly.

Know the rule

Orange is the basic color for construction and maintenance devices, and orange signs warn about road work.

Handbook p. 49 ↗

Most common work-zone devices:

  • Signs
  • Barricades
  • Drums
  • Cones
  • Tubes
  • Flashing arrow panels
  • Flagpersons
Handbook p. 49 ↗

Know the rule

Most construction and maintenance signs are diamond-shaped; a few are rectangular. They warn of unusual or potentially dangerous conditions.

Handbook p. 49 ↗

Channelizing devices:

  • Barricades, vertical panels, drums, cones and tubes
  • They alert you to hazards and guide you through the work zone
  • At night they often have flashing or steady-burn lights
Handbook p. 50 ↗

Know the rule

Diagonal stripes on a barricade or vertical panel show which way to pass: stripes sloping down to the right mean bear right; sloping down to the left mean bear left.

Handbook p. 50 ↗

Know the rule

Large flashing or sequencing arrow panels, used day and night, guide you into certain lanes and tell you the road ahead is closed.

Handbook p. 51 ↗

Know the rule

Flagpersons wear orange vests, shirts or jackets and use red flags or STOP/SLOW paddles to stop, slow or guide traffic.

Handbook p. 51 ↗

Put it into practice

Approaching roadwork at night, you see a barricade with orange-and-white stripes sloping down toward the right, plus a flashing arrow panel pointing right. Your lane is closed ahead: bear right and merge smoothly.
