Pedestrian signals tell walkers when to cross, and drivers should watch them too. A Pedestrian Hybrid Beacon (PHB) stays dark until a pedestrian pushes its button, then runs through yellow and red signals to stop traffic.

Pedestrian Hybrid Beacon (PHB)

An overhead signal that helps pedestrians cross busy streets. A pedestrian pushes a button to activate it and stop road traffic.

Know the rule

When WALK appears on the pedestrian signal, pedestrians may cross. After the flashing red, the PHB goes dark until a pedestrian activates it again.

Handbook p. 36 ↗

Put it into practice

A PHB overhead shows alternating flashing red lights. Come to a full stop. Once the pedestrians have cleared the crosswalk, you may proceed.

Check your understanding

Read the question, decide on an answer, then open it to check the explanation. These are Roadwise study questions based on the source handbook.

On a Pedestrian Hybrid Beacon (PHB), what does the signal display when not activated by a pedestrian?
  1. A steady yellow light
  2. A steady red light
  3. A flashing green light
  4. Dark for traffic

Answer: Dark for traffic

The PHB remains dark for traffic unless a pedestrian activates the push-button.

Handbook p. 36 ↗
What is the correct order of signals a driver sees after a pedestrian activates a PHB?
  1. Solid yellow, flashing yellow, solid red, flashing red
  2. Flashing yellow, solid yellow, solid red, flashing red
  3. Flashing yellow, solid red, solid yellow, dark
  4. Flashing red, solid red, solid yellow, dark

Answer: Flashing yellow, solid yellow, solid red, flashing red

After activation, drivers see flashing yellow, then solid yellow, then double solid red, then alternating flashing red before the beacon goes dark.

Handbook p. 36 ↗
What should a pedestrian do if the 'Don't Walk' signal begins flashing after they've already started crossing?
  1. Immediately return to the near curb
  2. Keep going and finish crossing
  3. Wait at the center line for the next Walk
  4. Stop in the middle of the street and wait

Answer: Keep going and finish crossing

A flashing 'Don't Walk' means don't leave the curb, but finish crossing if you already started.

Handbook p. 35 ↗
Pedestrians may begin crossing the street when the Walk signal is illuminated.
  1. True
  2. False

Answer: True

The Walk signal tells pedestrians they may leave the curb and cross the street.

Handbook p. 35 ↗
A PHB (Pedestrian Hybrid Beacon) signal stays dark for traffic at all times, even after a pedestrian presses the button.
  1. True
  2. False

Answer: False

The PHB stays dark only until a pedestrian activates it; it then cycles through flashing yellow, solid yellow, and flashing red.
