Regulatory signs tell you what you may or may not do, and you must obey them like traffic laws. A red circle with a red slash from upper left to lower right means "No"; the picture inside shows what's prohibited.

Know the rule

Drivers, including bicyclists, must obey regulatory signs in the same manner as traffic laws.

Speed and lane signs:

  • SPEED LIMIT 55: 55 mph is the maximum speed permitted in this area
  • REDUCED SPEED AHEAD: you're approaching an area with a lower speed limit
  • School speed limit: a reduced limit is in effect when the yellow lights are flashing
  • SLOWER TRAFFIC KEEP RIGHT: with 2+ lanes your way, slower traffic uses the right lane(s)

Regulatory signs tell drivers what they may or may not do; they must be obeyed in the same manner as traffic laws.
