Three basic laws sit above the rest: obey traffic control devices, obey officers and firefighters directing traffic, and stay off closed roads. This lesson also covers what to do when an emergency vehicle comes up with lights and siren.

The three most basic traffic laws:

  • Obey traffic control devices (lights and signs)
  • Obey a law enforcement officer or firefighter directing traffic, even if the lights or signs differ
  • Never drive on a road closed for construction, a special event or any other official reason
Handbook p. 18 ↗

Know the rule

Traffic laws prevent crashes by defining the orderly movement of vehicles, pedestrians and other highway users.

Handbook p. 18 ↗

Know the rule

All drivers, including bicyclists, must obey official signs and signals unless a police officer or emergency worker directs otherwise.

Handbook p. 29 ↗

Know the rule

When emergency vehicles use their emergency lights (blue or red) and sirens, slow down and move to the shoulder, or as far right as you can, and stop.

Handbook p. 18 ↗

Know the rule

Move over without endangering other motorists, bicyclists or pedestrians, and don't block an intersection or keep the emergency vehicle from turning.

Handbook p. 18 ↗

Know the rule

Unless you're on official business, don't follow a fire apparatus responding to a fire alarm, or other emergency vehicles, closer than 200 feet.

Handbook p. 25 ↗
200 feet

Handbook p. 25 ↗
500 feet

Don't park within this distance of fire apparatus stopped at a fire alarm

Handbook p. 25 ↗

Put it into practice

A firefighter at an intersection waves you through while your light is red. Follow the firefighter's direction; it overrides the signal.

Put it into practice

An ambulance with lights and siren comes up behind you just before an intersection. Don't stop in the intersection. Clear it, then pull to the right and stop.
