Sometimes you need to turn around, on a dead-end street or during your road test. DC restricts U-turns where others can't see you or where signals control traffic, and teaches a three-point turnabout.

Know the rule

Keep to the right, except when overtaking and passing a vehicle or cyclist, or making a left turn.

Handbook p. 41 ↗

Turnabout in close quarters:

  • Start from the extreme right side of the road and look for traffic
  • If clear, go forward slowly, turning the wheel left; stop several inches from the left curb or edge
  • Back up slowly, turning the wheel right; stop several inches from the right curb or edge
  • Go forward slowly, turning the wheel left; repeat the steps if needed

500 feet

No U-turn on a curve or hill where other drivers can't see your vehicle within this distance

Handbook p. 47 ↗

Know the rule

U-turns are prohibited in DC at intersections controlled by traffic lights, and on a crosswalk next to such an intersection.

Handbook p. 47 ↗

Know the rule

A No U-Turn sign means U-turns are illegal there. A No Right Turn sign means right turns are illegal there.

Handbook p. 55 ↗
No U-turn
No U-Turn sign
No right turn
No Right Turn sign

Put it into practice

You've missed a turn and reach a signalized intersection. A U-turn there is illegal in DC. Continue to a side street with a clear view and no No U-Turn sign, or use the three-point turnabout on a quiet street.
