A 3-minute lesson from the Arizona course. Read the rules and examples, follow the handbook page references, and check your understanding before you move on.
Passing puts you on the wrong side of the road or beside another vehicle, so you must be sure you have the time and room to finish the move. Normally you pass on the left; passing on the right is allowed only in a few situations.
How to pass on the left:
Signal that you are about to change lanes
Make sure you have time and room to get fully ahead without endangering oncoming traffic
Move into the left lane and pass
When its entire front or both headlights appear in your rearview mirror, look over your shoulder
If a vehicle behind you sounds its horn or flashes its lights, move right when safe and let it pass. Never speed up while another vehicle is passing you.
On a two-lane highway you've started passing a truck when you notice a railroad crossing sign ahead. If you can't complete the pass before coming within 100 feet of the crossing, drop back and wait.
