Once you're on the freeway, lane choice matters: keep right except to pass, give entering traffic room, and know the HOV rules. If you break down, get as far right as possible and signal for help.

Know the rule

On roads with two or more lanes, drive on the right half except when passing or when signs say otherwise.

Handbook p. 32 ↗

Know the rule

With three or more lanes in your direction, the right lane is used for entering and exiting, so traffic there may be slower or faster. Drivers not exiting may want to avoid it at rush hour.

Handbook p. 32 ↗

Know the rule

On a highway with three lanes, treat the far right lane as a slower-speed through lane and the far left lane as the passing lane.

Handbook p. 33 ↗
HOV diamond
HOV lanes are marked with white diamonds

Know the rule

During posted times Monday through Friday, you may not drive in an HOV lane with fewer than two persons, including the driver. At those times HOV lanes are for car pools, motorcycles or buses.

Handbook p. 33 ↗

Know the rule

Always signal and use caution when crossing the solid white line into or out of the HOV lane.

Handbook p. 33 ↗

On the freeway, do not:

  • Drive over or across any median or divided highway separation
  • Make a U-turn
  • Change lanes without signaling
  • Drive onto the freeway except at an on-ramp
  • Park or stop, except in special areas (shoulder parking only for emergencies)
  • Back up if you miss an exit — go on to the next exit
Handbook p. 33 ↗

If you need help on the freeway:

  • Pull onto the right shoulder as far as possible; avoid stopping on or near ramps
  • Turn on your emergency flashers or raise the hood
  • After dark, turn on your dome light and/or set out flares or warning signals
  • Wait for help — do not walk along the freeway
Handbook p. 32 ↗

Know the rule

If you come upon a disabled vehicle, reduce speed, move over, and pass it with caution.

Handbook p. 32 ↗

Put it into practice

It's 7:30 a.m. Tuesday, HOV hours are posted, and you're driving alone. You must stay out of the HOV lane — at least two people, including you, are required.
