Wisconsin driving lesson · Progression of Licenses
Applying & Sponsorship
A 3-minute lesson from the Wisconsin course. Read the rules and examples, follow the handbook page references, and check your understanding before you move on.
This course covers the Class D license: the non-commercial license for a car or light truck. You apply in person at a DMV service center, and if you're under 18 an adult must sponsor you and accept responsibility for your driving.
Bring these documents to the DMV
Proof of full name and date of birth (e.g., U.S. birth certificate or passport)
Proof of U.S. citizenship or legal status (e.g., U.S. birth certificate or passport)
Proof of identity (e.g., signed Social Security card or state photo ID card)
Two documents proving you live in Wisconsin (e.g., utility bill or financial statement)
Your Social Security number (the Social Security card also proves identity)
The adult who signs the Wisconsin DL Application (MV3001) for an applicant under 18 and accepts liability: legal and financial responsibility for incidents the minor causes while driving.
You're 17 and live with your aunt, not your parents. Your aunt can sign your MV3001 as sponsor. Your 17-year-old cousin could not, and even a sibling must be at least 18.
