Virginia driving lesson · Signals, Signs & Pavement Markings
Regulatory Signs
A 3-minute lesson from the Virginia course. Read the rules and examples, follow the handbook page references, and check your understanding before you move on.
Regulatory signs state the law, and you must obey them. Most are white rectangles with black or red. A red circle with a slash always means NO; the symbol inside the circle tells you what's prohibited.
Know the rule
Speed limit signs show the maximum legal speed when weather conditions are good. Some roads have electronic limits that change with weather or traffic.
Left Turn Yield on Green is used with a signal: left turners on a green light don't have the right-of-way and must yield to oncoming traffic. Stop, look for oncoming traffic, then proceed with caution.
It's snowing and the limit is 55 MPH. You drive 50 MPH and slide through a curve. You can still be ticketed: the posted limit is for good conditions, and you must drive slower when conditions make it unsafe.
Check your understanding
Read the question, decide on an answer, then open it to check the explanation. These are Roadwise study questions based on the source handbook.

Answer: Yes, if too fast for conditions
You may receive a ticket for driving too fast for conditions even at or below the posted speed limit.
