A 3-minute lesson from the Utah course. Read the rules and examples, follow the handbook page references, and check your understanding before you move on.
Work zones change the road you expect: narrow lanes, rough pavement, detours, and heavy equipment. Most people killed or hurt in them are drivers and passengers, not workers. Slow down every time, even when no one seems to be working.
Highway work zone
Any part of a road where construction, maintenance, or utility work is being done, including underground and overhead utility work, tree trimming, and surveying.
Work zones are marked by orange signs and devices, flashing lights on equipment, and workers in highly visible clothing. Watch for signs, cones, barrels, large vehicles, and workers.
Flaggers direct traffic with STOP and SLOW paddles
Put it into practice
It's 10 p.m. and you drive through a lane closure on I-15. The equipment is parked and no one is working. You still slow to the posted work zone speed, because narrow lanes remain and speeding fines are at least doubled.
Check your understanding
Read the question, decide on an answer, then open it to check the explanation. These are Roadwise study questions based on the source handbook.

Doubled
Tripled
The same as normal
Reduced
Answer: Doubled
Courts are required to fine a driver who speeds in a highway construction zone at least twice the normal amount.
