Parallel parking comes down to judging distance while controlling a slow speed — and checking traffic the whole time. Angle parking is easier going in but tricky coming out, because the cars beside you block your view.

Parallel parking in four steps

  • 1. Check behind, signal, stop even with the car ahead of the space, bumpers lined up, at least 2 feet away
  • 2. Look over your right shoulder; back slowly, turning sharply right to about a 45-degree angle
  • 3. When your front bumper passes the other car's rear bumper, turn sharply left
  • 4. Turn right and pull forward slowly until centered in the space

Know the rule

Before you open your door, check traffic. Wait for it to pass, get out quickly, shut the door and move to the curb.

Know the rule

Look, signal and yield the right-of-way when leaving any parking space, including a parallel space.

Entering an angle space on your right

  • Watch traffic ahead and behind
  • Signal and begin slowing
  • Make sure your rear will clear the parked cars
  • Steer sharply in, then straighten and center the car
  • Shift to park (or reverse in a manual) and set the parking brake
Handbook p. 81 ↗

Backing out of an angle space

  • Walk around first to make sure nothing is in the way
  • Remember your front swings opposite the direction of the turn
  • Back slowly; yield to pedestrians and oncoming vehicles
  • When you can see past the cars beside you, stop and look again
  • Keep backing until your left front wheel passes the rear bumper of the car on your left
  • Straighten the wheels as you enter the traffic lane
Handbook p. 81 ↗

Put it into practice

You finish parallel parking and your tire is about two feet from the curb. That's more than 18 inches — pull out and try again, or adjust forward and back until you're close enough.

Check your understanding

Read the question, decide on an answer, then open it to check the explanation. These are Roadwise study questions based on the source handbook.

When completing a parallel parking maneuver, your vehicle should end up no farther than how many inches from the curb?
  1. 6 inches
  2. 36 inches
  3. 48 inches
  4. 18 inches

Answer: 18 inches

Upon completing parallel parking, your vehicle should be no farther than 18 inches from the curb.

Handbook p. 80 ↗
When stopping alongside a car before parallel parking behind it, how close should your vehicle be?
  1. No closer than two feet from the other vehicle
  2. About six inches from the other vehicle
  3. At least one full car length away
  4. Ten feet away

Answer: No closer than two feet from the other vehicle

Before backing into a parallel spot, your vehicle should be no closer than two feet from the vehicle you're parking beside.

Handbook p. 80 ↗
When using angle parking, before backing out of the space you should:
  1. Rely only on your rearview mirror
  2. Immediately reverse at normal speed
  3. Only check the driver's side mirror
  4. Walk around to check the area

Answer: Walk around to check the area

Before backing out of an angle parking space, walk around to check that nothing is in your path, since visibility is limited.

Handbook p. 81 ↗

  1. True
  2. False

Answer: True
