A 2-minute lesson from the South Dakota course. Read the rules and examples, follow the handbook page references, and check your understanding before you move on.
South Dakota drivers face two special hazards: long grades where big vehicles pick up speed, and deer, which are the second most commonly struck object in the state.
Know the rule
When going down a long or steep hill, check your mirrors; vehicles build up speed on steep grades, so watch for large trucks and buses that may be going too fast.
The number and severity of collisions between vehicles and deer continues to increase. In South Dakota, deer are the second most commonly struck object, after intersection crashes and ahead of lane departures.
Driving at dusk in November, you spot two glowing eyes in the ditch. Slow down, blow the horn and be ready to stop, and keep watching, because a second deer may follow the first.
