North Dakota driving lesson · Signs, Signals & Markings
Regulatory signs
A 3-minute lesson from the North Dakota course. Read the rules and examples, follow the handbook page references, and check your understanding before you move on.
Regulatory signs give orders, not suggestions. Most are white with black letters or red with white letters. North Dakota uses three kinds of signs: regulatory, warning and guide. Learn the shapes too, so you can recognize a sign even from behind or in snow.
Stop sign: the only eight-sided sign
Know the rule
The Stop sign is the only eight-sided sign. Stop completely before the stop line or crosswalk. If there is neither, stop as near the intersection as possible where you can safely see traffic coming from all directions.
Signs that forbid an action are square, with black lettering on white and a red circle and slash over the action, such as No U-turn, No right turn, No trucks, or No left turn.
You want to turn left at a green light and see a LEFT TURN YIELD ON GREEN sign. You may turn on the green ball, but only after yielding to oncoming traffic.
