North Dakota driving lesson · Signs, Signals & Markings
Warning, school & special signs
A 3-minute lesson from the North Dakota course. Read the rules and examples, follow the handbook page references, and check your understanding before you move on.
Warning signs tell you about a possible hazard ahead: a curve, a merge, a railroad, a slow tractor. They give you time to slow down before you get there. Treat every one as a cue to ease off and look.
Know the rule
Warning signs are yellow with a black legend. They warn of potentially hazardous conditions ahead so you can proceed with extra caution.
Curve and turn signs give you time to slow before the curve. An advisory speed sign often goes with them, showing the maximum recommended speed for that curve or turn.
The Railroad Advance Warning sign is round with black letters on yellow. It means a railroad crossing is near; slow down so you can stop safely if a train is coming.
The slow-moving vehicle sign is an orange triangle with a red reflective border. It goes on the rear of vehicles or towed equipment moving 25 mph or less. Slow down and use caution.
Pedestrian and school signs may be fluorescent yellow-green or standard yellow. They mark a pedestrian crosswalk, a school or marked school crossing ahead, or a school crosswalk.
You come over a rise and see an orange triangle with a red border on a hay wagon ahead. That vehicle is going 25 mph or less. Slow down early and follow at a safe distance until you can pass legally.
