Some rules follow you after you're licensed. A minor's alcohol or drug offense can erase a license entirely, name and address changes must be reported quickly, and your vehicle must be registered and insured.

Know the rule

The director cancels the license of a driver under 18 for an alcohol or drug related offense while driving if the offense created an imminent risk to others, a lesser penalty wouldn't prevent future risk, and the court orders it.

Handbook p. 10 ↗

Know the rule

After that cancellation, the minor is treated as never having had a permit or license. You pass the knowledge and vision tests for a new permit, then finish driver's ed and the permit holding period before the road test.

Handbook p. 11 ↗

Driver's ed after a cancellation can be met by:

  • 30 hours classroom + 6 hours behind the wheel through the Department of Public Instruction
  • 6 hours behind the wheel at an NDDOT-approved commercial driving school
  • An NDDOT-approved Internet course + 30 hours of driving supervised by a parent or guardian
Handbook p. 11 ↗

Know the rule

Your point total does not automatically go back to zero when the cancellation requirements are met.

Handbook p. 11 ↗
10 days

Time to notify the Driver License Division of a name or address change, with documents

Handbook p. 12 ↗

Know the rule

A vehicle must be registered in North Dakota immediately when the owner or operator becomes a resident or becomes gainfully employed in the state.

Handbook p. 12 ↗

Two registration options:

  • Get a ND title and buy a vehicle license good through the end of the registration period
  • Buy a temporary registration permit if your other-state plates are current and your stay is short
Handbook p. 12 ↗
6 or 12 months

Lengths of a temporary registration permit (plus a $10 service fee each time)

Handbook p. 12 ↗

Know the rule

All vehicles must have liability insurance, and owners may not let a vehicle be driven without it. The registration card must be carried in the vehicle at all times.

Handbook p. 12 ↗

Put it into practice

You move to a new apartment across town. Within 10 days, notify the Driver License Division and provide documents showing the new address.
