North Dakota driving lesson · Your License & Permits
The road test & vehicle inspection
A 4-minute lesson from the North Dakota course. Read the rules and examples, follow the handbook page references, and check your understanding before you move on.
After your holding period you prove your skills on the road test, or waive it with approved driver training. You supply the car, and it must pass an equipment inspection before the test starts.
Bring to the road test:
Your valid North Dakota operator's permit
A driver's education Certificate of Training, if you're under 16
Current registration and proof of insurance for the test vehicle
Pets (except medical alert/service animals), passengers and electronic devices are not allowed in the vehicle. Self-parking vehicles aren't allowed; use another vehicle or turn the feature off.
The Class D road test can be waived with a ND Driving School Certificate of Course Completion or a Department of Public Instruction Student Completion Certificate showing at least 30 hours of classroom and six hours of behind-the-wheel training.
For a 14- or 15-year-old's Certificate of Training: 30 hours classroom plus six hours behind the wheel through the Department of Public Instruction, or six hours behind the wheel at an NDDOT-approved commercial driving school.
You must be at least 14 for behind-the-wheel training. A high school driver-ed student may drive the driver-ed car without a license or permit while supervised by a certified instructor, if the school district has insurance for it.
At 14 or 15 your permit covers a parent's, guardian's, grandparent's, sibling's, aunt's or uncle's Class D vehicle, but you may take the road test in a vehicle that isn't your parent's or guardian's.
Your family car's horn works only now and then. The examiner won't give the road test: the horn must be clearly audible for 200 feet, and any unsafe item stops the test. Fix it or bring another registered, insured car.
