North Dakota driving lesson · Your License & Permits
Getting your instruction permit
A 4-minute lesson from the North Dakota course. Read the rules and examples, follow the handbook page references, and check your understanding before you move on.
An instruction permit is your legal ticket to practice driving. In North Dakota you can apply at 14, but first you pass a knowledge test and a vision screen, and until you're 18 a parent or guardian has to sign for you.
Every time you drive on a permit, a supervising driver must ride in the seat beside you. That person must hold a valid license for the class of vehicle, be at least 18, and have at least three years of driving experience.
No one other than the supervising driver and the permit holder may be in the front seat, unless the vehicle has only a front seat. In that case the supervising driver must sit next to the permit holder.
Signed approval on the application from the father, mother, or legal guardian of an applicant under 18. A legal guardian must show guardianship papers.
You're 15 with a permit, and your 17-year-old brother, who has his license, offers to ride along so you can practice. That's not legal. Your supervisor must be at least 18, have three years of driving experience, hold a license for the vehicle, and sit beside you.
