A parked car must never be a hazard. Park where you are (1) far enough from any travel lane not to interfere with traffic and (2) visible to vehicles from both directions. Then know the distances: they're heavily tested.

Every time you park:

  • Use a designated area if possible
  • Set the parking brake; leave a manual in gear, an automatic in "park"
  • Check traffic before opening your door; exit on the curb side if you can
  • Shut the door as soon as you can after getting out
  • Never leave the keys in the vehicle; lock the doors
Handbook p. 16 ↗

Know the rule

If you must park on the roadway, park as far from traffic as possible; if there's a curb, park as close to it as you can.

Handbook p. 16 ↗

Know the rule

On a hill, turn your wheels sharply toward the side of the road or curb, so a rolling car goes away from traffic.

Never park more than this far from the curb

Handbook p. 16 ↗

Never park:

  • In an intersection
  • On a crosswalk or sidewalk
  • In a construction area if you'd block traffic
  • Blocking a driveway, alley, private road, or a curb lowered for sidewalk access
  • On a bridge or overpass, or in a tunnel or underpass
  • On the wrong side of the street
  • On the road side of a parked vehicle (double parking)
  • On railroad tracks
  • Wherever a sign says you cannot park
Handbook p. 16 ↗

Know the rule

Don't park in a space marked for the handicapped unless you have a handicap license plate, tag or sticker.

Handbook p. 16 ↗

Put it into practice

You find a spot 22 feet from a fire hydrant and 40 feet from a stop sign. Both are legal: you need 15 feet from the hydrant and 30 feet from the stop sign. Pull within 18 inches of the curb and set the brake.
