Every owner is responsible for keeping the vehicle in proper working condition. Check it before you drive: brakes, lights, horn, steering, tires, signals and glass. A defect can cause a crash, and it can also get your car turned away at the road test.

Know the rule

Backup lights should be on when you drive in reverse. It is against New Jersey law to have any backup lights on while moving forward.

Handbook p. 47 ↗

Know the rule

Get your brakes checked if the vehicle pulls to one side when stopping, the pedal feels taut, or you hear squealing or grinding.

Handbook p. 47 ↗

Know the rule

With conventional disc and drum brakes, pump them gently after driving through water to test and dry them. Hitting them hard could lock them up.

Handbook p. 47 ↗
25 feet

Distance you should be able to stop within at 20 mph (test it in an empty parking lot)

Handbook p. 47 ↗

Know the rule

Test anti-lock brakes (ABS) with steady pressure. Never pump ABS brakes or jerk the wheel. On loose gravel or unpacked snow, ABS may lengthen stopping distance.

Handbook p. 47 ↗

Know the rule

Have someone help you check brake lights, and replace broken light covers because they can cause glare for the driver behind.

Handbook p. 47 ↗

Know the rule

Bright and dim headlights must work and be aligned. If other drivers flash their lights while yours are on low beam, your lights may be out of line.

Handbook p. 48 ↗

Know the rule

Use the horn to signal when passing, when coming out of a blind alley, curve or driveway, or to warn of danger, but don't overuse it.

Handbook p. 48 ↗

Know the rule

On a straight, level road the vehicle should hold a straight course without front-end shimmy or too much play in the steering wheel.

Handbook p. 48 ↗
1/16 inch

Minimum tire tread depth (about the edge of a penny)

Handbook p. 48 ↗

Know the rule

Check tire pressure often, especially when tires are cold, using the owner's manual or driver's door jamb. Tires must match (don't mix radials with other types).

Handbook p. 48 ↗

Know the rule

If turn signals don't work, fix them as soon as possible and use hand signals until they are repaired.

Handbook p. 48 ↗

Know the rule

Repair cracked or chipped windshields and keep wipers working. New Jersey law prohibits add-on tinting on windshields and front side windows.

Handbook p. 49 ↗

Put it into practice

A thumping sound starts while you drive and the car pulls right when you brake. Check the tires for bumps or cuts and have the brakes inspected; both are warning signs the manual says not to ignore.

Check your understanding

Read the question, decide on an answer, then open it to check the explanation. These are Roadwise study questions based on the source handbook.

A motorist testing their brakes in an empty parking lot at 20 mph should be able to stop within what distance?
  1. 50 feet
  2. 25 feet
  3. 10 feet
  4. 100 feet

Answer: 25 feet

A motorist should be able to stop within 25 feet at 20 mph.

Handbook p. 47 ↗
A vehicle should not be driven with tires that have less than how much tread?

  2. 1/2 inch
  3. 1/16 inch
  4. 1/32 inch

Answer: Pump them gently to dry them out

After driving through water, a motorist should pump conventional brakes gently to test and dry them out.

Handbook p. 47 ↗
On very soft surfaces such as loose gravel or unpacked snow, what effect can an anti-lock braking system (ABS) have?
  1. It always shortens stopping distance
  2. It has no effect on stopping distance
  3. It may lengthen stopping distance
  4. It locks the front wheels

Answer: It may lengthen stopping distance

On very soft surfaces like loose gravel or unpacked snow, an ABS system may actually lengthen stopping distance.

Handbook p. 47 ↗
