A 3-minute lesson from the Nebraska course. Read the rules and examples, follow the handbook page references, and check your understanding before you move on.
Regulatory signs tell you what the traffic law requires. Unlike warning signs, they aren't advice: you must obey them.
Stop
Know the rule
Stop sign: stop completely before entering the intersection. Stop at the painted stop line if there is one; otherwise before the crosswalk, painted or unpainted. With no crosswalk, stop at the safest point nearest the cross road where you can see approaching traffic.
Turning onto a ramp, you see a red DO NOT ENTER sign. You're about to enter an exit ramp the wrong way. Don't drive past the sign; stop and find a safe way to turn around.
Check your understanding
Read the question, decide on an answer, then open it to check the explanation. These are Roadwise study questions based on the source handbook.
If there is a painted stop line at a stop sign, you must stop:
At the sign itself, regardless of the line
Wherever you can see cross traffic
Just before the crosswalk beyond the line
At the line
Answer: At the line
Drivers must stop at the painted line when one is present.
